Chapter 21

If Eric had known chucking her phone overboard would have such a dramatic impact on Megan, he would have done it himself on the first day. They danced in a cheerful crowd of people, fast songs and slow songs, enjoyed some amazing singing, and endured some awful singing. Megan even indulged in a piña colada or two. Or maybe three.

He was interested to see what song she picked out. And interested to see if she could sing.

Nearly two hours passed before Megan's turn came. When they called her name, she threw her hands in the air and danced her way to the stage while the crowd cheered. Eric made his way closer to the stage. He had to laugh when he recognized the first strains of Leslie Gore's "You Don't Own Me". Megan belted out the words with feeling. He might have been slightly biased, but he was pretty sure she got the most enthusiastic cheers of the night so far when she finished her song and bounded off the stage.

"WOOO! That was freaking awesome!" She wiped her hair back off her face.

"I thought you said you couldn't sing?"

"I can't, why, did I sound okay?"

"You were great." He meant it.

"How much have you had to drink?" She laughed. "Must have been a good bit if you thought my singing was great."

He shook his head. "Nope, I've only had two. I can still hear okay."

"Two?" In question, she held up two fingers.

"Yep."

"You're way behind. This is my fifth. I think. Not like we're driving anywhere." She pointed at the piña colada in her hand. "I freaking love the pineapple wedge thingies." She pulled it off the edge of the glass and chewed the fruit off while she danced. "Delicious."

Eric turned to look at something, and when he turned back, Megan was gone. He looked around and spotted her at the bar, holding a fresh piña colada, swaying to the music. Joining her, he ordered another drink of his own, then steered her across the deck, away from the loudest part of the crowd.

The air was damp and clingy, with a light spray coming off the ocean. The music was loud, the crowd was festive, and the drinks flowed freely. Eric cut himself off somewhere around midnight, but it didn't get rid of the slightly-more-than pleasant buzz he had. He suspected his legs were going to be sore from all the dancing, so he took a short break and got a bottle of water from the bar, then rejoined Megan, who hadn't stopped dancing since they'd arrived.

"What'd you get? Water's good. But not as good as this thing. What's this called again? Like pencil something. Peno. Peen-yuh. No, no, no, Kool-aid. Peen-yuh Kool-aid. That's not right, is it?" She broke off into hysterical giggles. "That's sooooo stupid. Why would something so yummy have such a stupid name? I think I'll call it Yummy Good Pineapple Drink." She looked down into her empty glass. "Shit. Where'd it go?"

Eric was convinced Megan was completely drunk, and he wasn't feeling so steady on his feet himself.
